For parents and coaches

Is Tabiya OK for children?

Tabiya is a chess trainer: courses, opening plans, puzzles, a game scan and an AI coach. Here is what your child will and won't meet in it, and what is stored.

No accounts, no strangers, no ads

There is no sign-up, no profile, no friends list, no comments and no way to message other people. The only conversation in Tabiya is with the AI coach. There are no ads and no advertising trackers.

The game scan reads public games from Lichess or Chess.com by username. Those sites have their own chat features and age rules; Tabiya only downloads finished games.

The AI coach

The coach is an AI (Anthropic's Claude) playing one of three characters inspired by world champions. They are styles of teaching, not the real people, and they say so if asked:

  • Garryattacking chess, demanding and intense about effort
  • Magnuscalm, practical chess, dry humour
  • Bobbyclassical principles, blunt about bad moves

Every coach follows the same rules, which come before the character:

  • Chess only. Anything else, or anything inappropriate, gets a short, friendly no and a return to chess.
  • Clean, kind, age-appropriate language. The characters can be blunt about a move (“that move loses”), never about the player.
  • The coach never asks for a real name, age, school, location or contact details.
  • Explanations match the rating band chosen at the start. “Under 1000” means one idea at a time in plain words: that is the closest thing to a child mode. There is no separate kids' mode.

The coach is an AI and can be wrong. When it analyses a position or game, the moves and evaluations come from the Stockfish engine and are shown next to the reply; here is how that works. It gives 5 free messages a day.

What is stored, and where

On the device only:

  • The rating band picked at the start (for example “under 1000”).
  • Course, drill and puzzle progress.
  • Weakness-scan reports, including the Lichess or Chess.com username typed in to fetch games.
  • Chats with the AI coach.

On our server:

  • Coach messages pass through our server to the AI provider (Anthropic) to write the reply, together with a short summary of the scan. They are not kept after the reply is sent back.
  • To enforce the free daily coach allowance, the server counts messages per day against a random install id and network address. No message content; discarded after the day.
  • Only if you create a sync code: a copy of progress, scan reports and the rating band, stored under that code so a second device can pull it. No name, email or password.
  • Requesting a missing opening card stores the opening name, nothing else.

The website counts page visits with cookieless Vercel Web Analytics (totals only, no profile); the iOS app has no analytics. Deleting the app or clearing this site's data removes everything on the device. Full details are in the privacy policy.

Money

Everything is free: courses, puzzles, the scan, plan cards and daily coach messages. The iOS app has no in-app purchases. On this website an optional Coach Pro pass gives more coach messages a day; it is a one-off payment and nothing renews, so there are no surprise charges.

Where a child should start

New players: the Booster to 1000 courses and the under-1000 lessons. Every move is explained, then drilled, and none of it needs the coach.
