Stop giving pieces away
Diagnosis: At this level roughly 70% of losses come from one thing: pieces left hanging or simple tactics missed. Openings and strategy barely matter yet — board vision decides everything. The fastest rating gain in chess is here.
1. The 10-second blunder check
5 minBefore EVERY move, ask two questions, in order. One: what did their last move attack or threaten? Two: after my planned move, can anything of mine be taken for free — is every piece defended?
That's the whole lesson. It feels slow for a week, then becomes automatic. Players who build this habit gain 200+ points without learning anything else, because their opponents at this level don't do it.
Play only time controls long enough to actually run the check — 10-minute games or slower. Bullet teaches your hands, not your eyes.
Black's last move (...b5) attacked your bishop — and b5 is guarded by a6. Question one of the check, answered before you touch anything else.
2. Checks, captures, threats — in that order
6 minWhen you don't know what to move, don't look for a 'good move'. Scan forcing moves in strict order: every check you can give, every capture you can make, every threat you can create. Then the same list for your opponent's reply.
Forcing moves are the skeleton of chess. Most tactics you 'miss' were a check or capture you never looked at — not a calculation failure, a scanning failure.
This scan plus the blunder check is a complete thinking system for under-1000 chess. Nothing else required.
Scan checks first: Ne7+ forks the king and the c8 bishop. You find it by listing every check — not by staring at the position hoping.
3. Openings without memorising
5 minYou need exactly three rules, not lines: fight for the centre with a pawn or two, develop knights and bishops toward the centre (knights before bishops when unsure), castle before move 10.
Don't move the same piece twice before development is done, don't bring the queen out early, don't grab wing pawns while behind in development. Violate these only when you see a concrete free piece.
When you're ready for a complete beginner repertoire with every single move explained, the Booster to 1000 course is built for exactly this band: the Italian as White, and one solid setup as Black against 1.e4 and 1.d4.
4. The two mates you must know cold
8 minKing + queen vs king, and king + rook vs king. Winning a whole extra queen means nothing if the game ends in stalemate — and at this level it does, constantly.
Queen mate: box the king to the edge with queen a knight's-move away from their king (so no stalemate), then walk your king up and deliver. Rook mate: use your king directly opposite theirs, rook checks on the far rank; shrink the box a rank at a time.
Practice each five times against the engine drill until it takes under 30 seconds of thought total. This is the highest-certainty investment in chess.
Queen vs king: box, approach, mate. No checks until the very end — checks let the king run.
