The structure: QGD after Capablanca's freeing manoeuvre

Black: pawns c6/e5 with a free c8 bishop; White: d4/e3 with rooks on the c-file. Symmetric-ish; the fight is whether White's c-file activity outweighs Black's easy development.

Trades: yes and no

Trade rooks on the c-file when you can contest it; trade queens if the resulting endgame is symmetric — draws with Black are fine, wins come later. Don't play ...exd4 automatically if it opens the e-file for White's rooks. Keep the knight until White's bishop is neutralised.

Motifs to watch

  • ...e4 gaining space and hitting f3, then ...Nf6–?d5
  • ...exd4 exd4 then ...Nb6 and ...Bg4 against the IQP
  • White's Qc2/Rfc1 c-file doubling — answer with ...Rd8 and ...Nf8/...Be6
  • White's e4 push after dxe5 — watch the d-file for both sides
