The structure: London pyramid with e5 outpost
White's c3/d4/e3 pyramid concedes no targets; the e5 knight, backed by f4, turns the solid setup into an attacking one. Black plays ...c4/...b5 queenside expansion or breaks with ...f6/...e5. Wings race; centre stays shut.
Trades: yes and no
If Black takes on g3, recapture hxg3 with joy — the h-file is a highway. Trade dark-squared bishops only via Black's initiative, never your own tempo. Don't swap the d3 bishop or the e5 knight without immediate gain — they ARE the attack. Avoid dxc5 unless it wins something concrete; it dissolves your pyramid.
Motifs to watch
- f4 then Qf3/Qe2–h5 or g4–g5: the standard storm
- Nxe5 dxe5 (or fxe5) trades that leave you a free f-file or a monster e5 pawn
- Bxh7+!? Greek-gift patterns when Black's f6 knight leaves
- Black's ...cxd4 and ...Qb6/...Ba6 queenside play — answer with Qb1/Rb1 calm
