The road to the tabiya
Step through the move order. Amber moves carry an idea — read them, don't memorise them.
Why this matters
Build the wall (d5–e6–f5), park a knight on e4, and go after the king with ...g5. Positional structure, attacking mindset.
The structure: Stonewall (d5–e6–f5)
Black's pawn wall grants the e4 outpost and kingside space at the cost of the e5 hole and a buried c8 bishop. White's play: the e5 square, the c-file after cxd5, and trading Black's dark bishop. Black's play: everything on the kingside.
Trades: yes and no
Trade your bad c8 bishop whenever possible (…Bd7–e8–h5 route or ...b6/...Ba6). Trade White's e5 knight with ...Nbd7xe5 to remove the best blockader. Avoid trading the d6 bishop unless you get White's b2 bishop back — it's your attacking piece. Don't allow ...Ne4 to be exchanged without recapturing with the f-pawn (opening the f-file).
Motifs to watch
- ...Ne4 with ...fxe4 recapture opening the f-file
- ...g5–g4 kicking the f3 knight, then ...Qh4/…Rf6–h6
- White's Ba3 trade — keep ...Bxa3 or ...Qe7 recapture sorted
- White's Ne5: trade with a knight from d7, never with the bishop
