The structure: Open Catalan (queenside pressure)
White: d4, e2/e3 with the g2 bishop on the long diagonal; Black: e6, c7 (and a6/b5 pawns). Black's c-pawn is the whole game — if ...c5 comes cleanly Black is fine; if it can't, White's queenside pressure grinds.
Trades: yes and no
Trade Black's b7 bishop (the only piece opposing your g2 bishop) via Ne5 or Bg5xf6-then-Ne5 ideas. Trade minor pieces that defend c7/c5. Never swap the g2 bishop. Don't trade queens too early — your pressure needs the queen on the c-file.
Motifs to watch
- Bd2–a5 pressure on c7 and the c-file
- a4 lever against b5, opening the a-file
- Ne5 hitting the b7 bishop's partner (c6) and the f7 point
- Black's ...c5 break — meet with dxc5 only if a piece can hit c5/c6 afterwards
