The structure: Accelerated Dragon structure (half-open c-file, ...b5 space)

Your a7/b5/d6/e7 vs White's a2/b2/c2/e4/f3: you own the c-file and queenside space; White owns the centre and a half-grip on d5. Your levers: ...b4, ...a5-a4, and ...d5 once the tactics allow; White's: the h-file storm after O-O-O, or a central e5? — rarely — mostly the g4/h4 machinery.

Trades: yes and no

...Nxd4 (banked) is the classic good trade. Offer ...Be6 to swap the b3 bishop — it defends White's queenside and watches d5. The exchange sac ...Rxc3! is thematic whenever bxc3 wrecks White's king cover. Never trade the g7 bishop for a knight — without it both your king and your dark squares go bankrupt. Don't swap queens when White's king sits safer than yours — rare; usually YOU want the ending thanks to the healthier majority.

  • ...b4 evicting the c3 knight, then ...d5 (mind the d4 bishop's eye on a5/b6 before any ...Qa5)
